Don’t spend a lot of money on your under layer pieces. I get good cheap long sleeves and tanks at rag stock, Walmart and the dollar store. Yes! The dollar store. If I plan to pile layers or sweaters on top of it, no one is really going to see it. However I DO spend money on the top layer.
I would not go crazy over the bottom (starter) layer. However the top shrug/sweater and scarf are statement pieces and need to be on point. Stay away from fully synthetic material. It tends to pill and doesn’t look neat anymore then you are heading into the cheap zone. (Go to my blog trendy vs classic, where I go more into detail about cheap vs bargain). Do invest in 100% cotton and wool. Knits always help you with a little give especially during the holiday season when you may put on a little extra lbs.
Have fun with your layers! Add texture and weird shit! Let’s face it, it’s hard to look cute during the cold and stand out. I add my flair with a hat or a bright scarf or some cool patterned socks. This helps to show your creative side, like you put some effort in your outfit even though at this point in the winter it is about survival, not looking cute. Well you CAN achieve both!
I started this outfit off with a simple LBD. Paired it with funky tights, thick socks, chunky boots, oh yea and a splash of bedazzle. Then I put a shrug over it with a belt after that a statement scarf. Grab my coat, shawl, or top jacket and I’m off.
For guys not so far off. Layer by texture as well, and don’t be afraid of scarves! Also, we can retire our hairdos for a little. It’s cold out. Try a little spice with a cool hat and own it!
